The fourth annual Lamu7s Rugby Tournament, hosted by the Waridi Foundation, reaffirmed the role of sports in highlighting the intersection of youth empowerment, sustainable tourism, and community development.

The tournament’s impact stretched beyond the pitch. Held on World Tourism Day, the event integrated the “Plant & Play” initiative, which saw 5,000 mangroves planted along Lamu’s coastline, a town clean-up campaign, and the promotion of Lamu’s ecotourism attractions such as Pangani Forest, Lake Kenyatta, and over 126 bird species.

These activities are aligned with the global call for sustainable tourism while directly benefiting the local environment.

Waridi Foundation founder Jennifer Waridi, who initiated the Lamu7s while serving as Miss Tourism Kenya in 2017, underscored the broader mission of the tournament: “Lamu is a one-stop destination—from the island’s sandy beaches to the mainland’s eco-tourism gems. Lamu7s blends sport, sustainability, and tourism to create opportunities for our youth.”

Supported by partners such as Green Pamoja Initiatives, Asali Mikoko, Pride of Lamu, White Label Entertainment, and the Lamu Muslim Association, the event has become a beacon of how sport can drive both social and economic impact.

Despite enduring logistical challenges, the four-team tournament featuring Mpeketoni Girls Rugby Team, Young Cubs Mpeketoni, and Malindi Turtles attracted viewership from the larger Lamu region.

The Malindi Turtles defended their title with a 12–0 win, but the bigger victory was the growing enthusiasm for rugby in a region where the sport is still developing.

For the first time, all participating teams received cash prizes, a gesture meant to reward effort and encourage more grassroots participation.

Leaders, including Deputy Governor Dr. Mubarak Bhajaj and several county officials, pledged long-term support for rugby through the provision of kits and equipment. Coast music legend Susumila added cultural flavor with a performance that celebrated local talent.

With its growing popularity and multi-dimensional approach, the Lamu7s is positioning itself as a signature event that not only builds sporting talent but also nurtures community pride and environmental stewardship.
