Late Mwarangu got me into boxing leadership – Kameta

Former Kenyan boxer Peter Mwaranga is dead

Former Boxing Association of Kenya (BAK) president John Kameta has attributed his rise to lead the sport to former national boxing coach Peter Mwarangu, who died on Sunday after a long illness.

Kameta paid tribute to the departed coach saying he helped him rise through the ranks to head the federation.

"It's a big disappointment for me because coach Mwarangu took my hand when I was unknown because he saw in me boxing leadership talent and I've been side by side with him getting advice from him until when I became president.

“I stood by him when I was president, keeping him close to me because he was an old man who loved and understood the game of boxing with so much vision," said Kameta.

Mwarangu passed away on Sunday at around 7pm in Nairobi at the age of 81 and his body is lying at Montezuma Funeral Home as preparations for his funeral gets underway.

"I am deeply saddened because Kenya, Africa and the world have lost a veteran coach, a coach who understood himself, a coach who loved boxing, a Mwarangu coach whom God saw fit to rest.

“I feel very sorry for his family and community, I feel very sorry for boxing lovers and I feel sorry for all the coaches and all the boxers who passed through his hands," added Kameta.

Mwarangu, who was born on 10 Feb. 1942, was coach of the Kenyan team for 40 years from the 1960’s and is also the founder of the Kenya Prisons Boxing Club.
