Leopards desperate to end Gor jinx

AFC Leopards head coach Patrick Aussems his boys are desperate to end their winless run against FKF Premier League derby rivals Gor Mahia FC when they clash on Sunday.

Gor have not lost the Mashemeji derby in six years with their last defeat coming in March 2016, and now Leopards are bracing for another attempt to turn tables on what has been a very one-sided rivalry in recent years.

“There is always the time to win a game and so Gor Mahia or any other team I don’t care. My opponents are there and I know it’s a special game for a lot of people although we still don’t know the stadium that the game will be played at.

“I hope the stadium will be full and I think this is the right moment to have a football game between the two biggest teams in Kenya,” Aussems said.

The red-hot John-Mark Makwatta has been a focal point for Leopards scoring five goals in six matches since joining them on loan this year and Aussems is hoping his form will be key.

“He came in and displayed a good performance and scored a goal and now I can say that that sets a good mood before the derby on Sunday,” Aussems added.

The Police FC striker was forced to start on the bench against KCB on Sunday but managed to come in and score from the spot-kick with Aussems citing disciplinary breach the main reason, however all eyes will now shift to the derby and Makwatta will be available for selection.

“For that and also because you know in a group you must have some rules to respect and you know sometimes if you don’t respect the rules you can be punished by your coach.

“Makwatta started on the bench, I told him during the week why, but you know it’s between us for what happens in Vegas stay in Vegas guys,” Aussems stated.

Organisers are yet to decide on a venue for the clash that pits two of the country’s most successful teams against each other.

Leopards sit 10th on the league standings with 38 points, eight behind Gor Mahia who are fifth.
