Leopards, who entered the match in second place on 40 points and breathing down the neck of leaders Gor Mahia, were unable to break through a determined KCB defence despite controlling much of the play.

The bankers, starting the day eighth on 29 points, defended with discipline and organisation to frustrate their rivals throughout.

The decisive goal arrived in the 64th minute after what started from a long free kick which Ingwe defenders failed to clear, was headed to David Sakwa's head, who then smartly headed home.

The goal was enough to secure all three points for KCB, who moved to 32 points and boosted their own mid-table aspirations.

The loss leaves AFC Leopards stuck on 40 points after 21 games, now level on points with Shabana, who claimed a dramatic 90+8th-minute winner against Mathare United on Wednesday.

With Gor Mahia holding a narrow lead, Leopards' ambitions have been dented at a crucial stage, increasing the pressure to respond strongly in their next outing.

Head coach Fred Ambani remained forward-looking in his post-match comments.

"This is the time to motivate players, and let them know there is an important game ahead that we need to focus on," he said.

The result has added extra tension to the top of the FKF Premier League standings.

Shabana's recent form and Kakamega Homeboyz' resilience – they drew 1-1 with Ulinzi Stars on Thursday, moving to 35 points – mean the chasing pack is closing in fast.

For Leopards, the derby defeat serves as a stark reminder of the fine margins in a fiercely competitive title race.

In other matches played on Thursday, holders Police FC deepened Sofapaka’s woes with a 2-0 win at Vapor Grounds, while visitors Kariobangi Sharks claimed a 1-0 win over APS Bomet at Green Stadium Awendo.

Goals from Yves Koutiama and Abud Omar lifted Police to 34 points in fifth, while Sofapaka remain rooted at the bottom of the table on 14 points and facing deepening relegation worries.

Kakamega Homeboyz were held to a one-all draw by Ulinzi Stars at Ulinzi Sports Complex, while Bidco United versus Mara Sugar ended in a 2-2 draw at Wang’uru Stadium.
