Lucrative Eldoret City Marathon gets Stanbic boost

Stanbic Bank has become the latest corporate to support the Eldoret City Marathon, boosting the inaugural race with a KSh2.5m sponsorship package.

The development takes the combined prize money to KSh13 million, making it the most lucrative road race in the country.

The competition is an initiative of the Uasin Gishu County Government and will see each winner in the men and women categories will pocket KSh3 million in prize money.

The runners-up and third place finishers in both fields will take home Sh1.5m and Sh1million respectively with organisers keen to put the race that will be run on the self-styled ‘City of Champions’ Eldoret on the global map.

Stanbic CEO Charles Mudiwa said that the bank is happy to contribute towards making the Eldoret City Marathon a destination for the World’s biggest athletics names.

“To keep churning more world beaters, it is only fair that a region that has given so much joy to Kenyans and the world be feted with a race of its own.

“Our sponsorship is intended to help provide a platform in partnership with our partners for upcoming talent that has lacked the chance to showcase their talents due to inadequate structures,” he said.

Race Director, former two-time Boston Marathon winner Moses Tanui, expressed confidence that the race will enable young and upcoming athletes to showcase their talents.

“We are going to make sure this race becomes one of the best in the region as well as in the athletics calendar as we continuously groom the next big athletes. This is a chance to compete in an international event right at home,” the former World Half Marathon champion said.

Registration will be free for the race will kick off on Sunday 22.
