Lukenya University has launched an annual marathon dubbed ‘One Million Trees Marathon’ that will see the organisers lead a drive to plant one million trees within five years.

That means at least 200,000 seedlings will be planted annually with that bid aligning with President William Ruto’s call to plant a billion tree seedlings every year.

The marathon will be held on March 26 at the Lukenya University Main Campus in Mtito Andei, Makueni County and will feature four race categories namely; full marathon, half marathon, 10km and 5km for fun and family, and 5km.

The Lukenya University board of trustees said it aims to help give fresh air and a clean environment to the people around Lukenya and chose to stage the marathon at Mtito Andei where there is little tree cover.

Former world marathon Patrick Makau was appointed the event’s brand ambassador.

“I urge Kenyans to come together and plant trees to save our future. I call for all athletes to register in numbers and engage in tree planting and win together,” Makau said.

All proceeds of the marathon will go towards tree planting costs.
