Makau proud of Divas despite missing World Cup ticket
The Kenya women's national netball team is back in the country from
South Africa after competing in the World Cup qualifiers where despite failing
to qualify, they finished in their best position in history.
The Divas defeated Botswana 57-49 to finish fifth at the African
netball world cup qualifiers in Pretoria, South Africa.
Head coach Joseph Makau is proud of his players, saying they
have made tremendous progress.
"We were able to finish fifth, which is the best position
for us since we started participating in international games. Athough we did
not qualify for the global showpiece set for next year in Cape Town, we have a
lot that we have learnt. We will go back to practice to strengthen ourselves
more, the future is bright.
“We are grateful to the National Olympic Committee for
supporting us to compete in the nine-day tournament," said the coach.
The competition was played on a round-robin format with the nine
teams split into two pools based on the most recent results from the Africa Cup
2021 final placing.
The team began the qualifiers on a low note losing to Zambia
47-30 before suffering a humiliating 72-31 loss to Malawi.
Their efforts however paid off in their last group match against
Eswatini when they won 52-36.
The Malawi Queens took home the silver medal after losing to
hosts South Africa in the final, 60-44.
