Malkia Strikers fall to Belgium in Netherlands
Malkia Strikers remained winless at the ongoing FIVB Women’s World Volleyball Championships after falling in straight sets to Belgium on Sunday to register their second successive loss in Pool 'A' at Geldredome Arena in Arnhem, Netherlands.
Poor reception, the team’s unending drawback, was at play yet again as the Belgium's Yellow Tigers' romped to victory in sets of 25-15, 25-14 and 25-11 to delay Malkia Strikers’ dream for their second ever win at the global stage.
Reigning Africa’s best attacker Sharon Chepchumba showed some flashes hitting 13 points, all from attack, behind Outsider Hitter Britt Herbots who topped with 16 points.
After two straight wins on the trot, Belgium topped the group on six points after picking maximum points against Kenya and Puerto Rico but hosts the Netherlands are poised to level points if they defeat Cameroon later on Sunday.
The nine-time African champions will be out to seek redemption against African rivals Cameroon on Tuesday with a win enough to propel the Kenyans to the elusive second round.
After the Cameroon test, the Kenyans play European Volleyball Nations League (VNL) champions Italy on September 29 before winding up the preliminary matches against Puerto Rico two days later.
