Manchester United’s campaign at the Champions League ended in a disaster after they lost 3-2 to Wolfsburg in the last group match played at the Volkswagen Arena in Germany Tuesday night.
United needed at least a draw in the match and hope that PSV Eindhoven lose or draw to CSKA Moscow and everything seemed fine at first with the results going their way in shifts before the tide turned against them.
The Red Devils began the match on a good note, scoring the first goal through Anthony Martial in the 10th minute but the hosts surged forward and equalised three minutes later through a goal by Ronaldo Aparecido Rodrigues, also known as Naldo.
United’s goal at the tail end of the first half was ruled out after it was adjudged to be offside to end the first half in favour of Wolfsburg.
The second half was filled with drama as PSV went down to CSKA through a penalty in the other match played at the Phillips Stadion in Netherlands to give United hope, though the relief was short-lived as the goal was equalised minutes later.
United fought their way into the race with Josuha Guilavogui’s 82nd minute own goal but Naldo scored to give Wolfsburg their third goal and end the match 3-2.
PSV added the second goal in the other match to shutter any hopes of United qualifying to the last 16 of Champions League.
