Former African Boxing Union (Abu) light heavyweight
champion; Daniel Wanyonyi has given a review of his weekend victory against
Tanzania’s Karim Mandonga.
Wanyonyi said he
intended to punish Mandonga who had earlier beaten him through technical
knockout in a non-title super middleweight fight that was staged at the
Kenyatta International Conventional Center (KICC) in Nairobi in January this
year.
Following his
Saturday victory, the Kenyan boxer said he could have finished the fight in the
early rounds, but he refrained out of respect for the fans.
According to him,
he wanted to give the fans value for their money by staging an entertaining
match.
“Though I knocked
him down twice, I didn’t want to take him out of the game early. I was
concerned that the fans would not get the value of money they paid to watch the
fight if I ended the game earlier,” Wanyonyi said.
Adding: “I was sure
he couldn't beat me this time, so I punished him. I am sure he did not get a
good night's sleep.”
He attributed his
victory to enough preparation he put in before meeting Mandonga in a non-title
fight that was held at Sarit Center Expo in Nairobi last weekend.
Wanyonyi emerged the victor
on points after flooring Mandonga in the sixth and tenth rounds of the highly
anticipated fight.
On his side, Mandonga, who
controlled the bout well in the first three rounds, congratulated Wanyonyi on
his victory, but he vowed to exert revenge on the Kenyan boxer in their next
match.
"Nothing bad has happened,
I have lost this fight, and I congratulate him. Today he has won; tomorrow it
will be me," said Mandonga.
Following his Saturday victory, Wanyonyi’s record now stands at (29-15-2), while Mandonga’s record is at (6-4-2).
