Masinde Muliro Rugby once again showed their determination to remain in the Kenya Cup after defeating Kisumu RFC 25–12 in a spirited clash at the MMUST Grounds today.

This was the second consecutive win for the Makakas, who came into the match knowing it was a battle for survival and pride.

The opening ten minutes were tense, with both sides testing each other through tactical kicking. A double sin-bin left each team a man short, setting the tone for a physical contest.

MMUST broke the deadlock after 15 minutes when Clarence Hope crossed for the first try, though Flavian Otiyo’s conversion drifted wide. Captain Veron Kaburu then turned defence into attack to score the second try, before Hope struck again with a clinical finish that stretched the lead to 15–0. Kisumu’s hopes faltered as Wawire’s penalty rattled the post, but substitute Walter Ambe made an immediate impact, powering over after a scrum battle. The conversion missed, leaving the halftime score at 15–5.

The second half was more intense, with MMUST dictating the tempo. Godfrey Anyanga extended the lead to 20–5 after Kaburu’s effort, and Kaburu himself added another try.

Kisumu responded with a converted score, but the game closed at 25–12 as the referee blew the final whistle.

Speaking to Citizen Digital, MMUST coach John Asila praised his side, noting that despite ongoing exams, the players showed hunger and energy. “They’ve been training from 5.30pm to 7pm, and that drive is what gave them this win. We thank God for the opportunity and glory,” he said.

He also acknowledged Kisumu’s strength, calling them a solid side with a serious coach. Kisumu RFC’s coach Howard Okwemba declined to comment.

The victory lifts MMUST to nine points in the Kenya Cup standings, while Kisumu trail with six points.
