Matano, Njogu pledge support as Vihiga gears up for CECAFA

Kenya National Coaches Association (KENFOCA) chairman Robert has pledged technical assistance to Vihiga Queens counterpart Alex Alumira in achieving his dream of clinching the CECAFA Women Club Championship.

The championship will also serve as the qualifiers for the inaugural edition of the CAF Women’s Champions League, hence the weight the experienced tactician is laying on it with Kenya being the host.

Speaking to Citizen Digital after visiting Vihiga Queens training camp in Kenya Institute of Special Education (KISE) Kasarani whereby they issued training kits to the team and Sh.15, 000 token for players, Matano hailed the girls for the hard work promising to assist them to sharpen their skills ahead of the tournament.

“He is our Deputy Secretary in KENFOCA and that’s why we have decided to visit his so that we can offer our support ahead of the Cecafa tournament. I have watched the team’s training so far and I think Alumira needs to work more on finishing. The players are doing well but they need to sharpen their scoring skills and I will chip in to assist my brother Alumira in achieving that,” said Matano.

KEFOCA Secretary General John Njogu who accompanied Matano expressed his satisfaction with the training the girls have had so far, also pledging to offer more technical support.

“A part from giving players a small token we have also issued training kits for them as well as a special gift for coach Alumira which will assist him when coaching. This is not the end of our support as an association.”

The championship was set to kick off on Saturday, July 17, Nairobi, but was   postponed due to financial constraints as explained by the football Kenya Federation and CECAFA.

Initial plans were that hosts Vihiga Queens open the competition against FAD Club of Djibouti in a Group C match.

Uganda’s representatives Lady Doves, who won the FUFA Super League, are in Group A alongside Tanzania’s Simba Queens and Burundi’s PVP FC, while Group B has Commercial Bank FC (Ethiopia), Yei Joint Stars FC (South Sudan) and New Generation (Zanzibar).

The eventual winners of the tournament will represent CECAFA region in the inaugural CAF Women’s Champions League to be held in Egypt later this year.
