Mathare youth win gold in East African Cup

Mathare Youth Sports Association U13 boys’ team and U13 girls’ team won gold medals at the just concluded East Africa Cup. MYSA had two the two football teams for this year. The boys team won 1 – 0 against Msimamo Youth in the finals, while the girls team thrashed Right to Play 5 – 0, both teams are from Tanzania.

In the U16 category, Moshi Local A beat KPL select side 1 – 0 while moving the Goal Posts from Kilifi, Kenya beat Buguruni Youth Centre 2 -1 on post-match penalties. Besides soccer this year’s event involved volleyball and sitting volleyball.

CHRISC Tanga emerged champions after beating CHRISC Kenya in both male and female volleyball categories with CHRISC Uganda emerging champions in the sitting volleyball. This year’s event attracted 88 teams with over 1,700 participants from Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania mainland, Zanzibar, Rwanda, Zambia and observers from Mozambique and Norway, the biggest ever in the history of the event.

About East Africa Cup

East Africa Cup is organized annually in Moshi Tanzania under the theme “Learning through Sports” Participants had an opportunity to participate in Sports and attend workshops on Children safe guarding information, HIV/AIDS information, learn about Kicking Aids Out games, First Aid, Environment conservation, Conflict resolution, Interfaith dialogue, Coaching, refereeing, Youth and Agriculture and about leadership in Sport.

The event took place from 23rd – 28th June: although it’s really about year-round community involvement through sports. The lessons learnt and friendships made at the event can last a lifetime.

MYSA was also active in other aspects of the tournament with a delegation of 65 participants who were in charge of Referees trainings, First Aiders, Field Managers, Organizing committee members, Media trainees, Cartoon and Animation Trainees and Executive Committee Member.
