McCarthy’s men roared to a 2-1 victory over Chad in an international friendly match played in Morocco on Tuesday, marking the first win for the South African coach in four matches.
“The boys were fantastic. Every player in camp gave their all and truly deserved this win. We furnished more clinically, especially in the final third during our final training session yesterday.” said McCarthy.
McCarthy also praised the new call-ups for grasping the chance after he made nine changes to the side that were held to a goalless draw by the same opponent last Saturday.
The South African made tactical changes to the starting line-up, dropping nine including FKF Premier League second-placed top scorer Moses Shumah, Adam Wilson, Boniface Muchiri, Daniel Sakari, Aboud Omar, Brian Mandela, Brian Musa, Brian Bwire, and Alphonce Omija.
He also expressed optimism about the team's future, especially as preparations gear up for the upcoming African Nations Championship (CHAN) tournament in August to be co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.
“We’re building something strong here, also giving minutes to the international players so that the local players can build on the experience these few players have. If we stick to the good football we play, we’ll give Kenyans more to celebrate, more victories, and more pride in the national team,” he added.
Current FKF Premier League top scorer and FC Talanta talisman Emmanuel Osoro and Bandari forward David Sakwa, who were on target for Stars said McCarthy’s tactics were aligning with their strengths, allowing them to thrive on the field.
“We knew we missed chances in the last game, and we trained with that in mind. Today, we were more clinical and that made the difference. The coach is a father-figure to us, and we’re really enjoying his tactics,” said Osoro, who opened the scoring sheet for the Kenyan side.
“This is a young, hungry squad. Kenyans should believe in us. Scoring for the national team was a dream come true, and I’m proud of what we’ve achieved as local-based players,” Sakwa said.
McCarthy, a former Manchester United assistant coach, took over Harambee Stars earlier this year with a vision to rebuild the national team ahead of CHAN and AFCON 2027 tournaments.
Stars are set to regroup ahead of CHAN scheduled for August, with momentum now clearly on their side.
