Top of the table, five wins on the bounce, and a
fortress yet to fall — Mombasa United are brimming with belief ahead of
Friday’s heavyweight clash against MOFA FC in the National Super League.
The coastal side sit proudly at the summit with 43
points, while third-placed MOFA FC trail on 38, setting up a high-voltage
encounter that could stretch the gap to a commanding eight points.
Head coach Gilbert Selebwa has made it clear —
motivation will not be in short supply.
“We are still unbeaten at home and that’s the first
motivation to my team. Also the fact that we are playing against title
contenders is another motivation, but I call upon Mombasa people to show up in
large numbers and support us and God willing I am sure we will get the maximum
points.”
United head into the clash riding high after a
gritty 2-1 away victory over Darajani Gogo last weekend, a result that extended
their winning streak to five matches and further strengthened belief within the
squad.
But beyond the three points lies unfinished
business.
In the first leg in Kisumu, Mombasa United suffered
a heavy 4-0 defeat — a result that still lingers in memory. Now, back on home
soil, Selebwa has declared it payback time.
“If we win against MOFA we will open a new page
since the difference between us to them will increase from 5 to 8 — this will
give us a leverage as we move on because for them to catch us again it will
mean we lose 3 matches which I think is close to impossible.”
The coach did not shy away from revisiting the
earlier defeat.
“In first leg we lost against them — a game which
was mauled with contagious things — but now we are at home and it’s a revenge
time and they should expect the same treatment here in Mombasa.”
While the focus remains on the title race, the
club’s ambitions stretch beyond Friday night.
Mombasa United have organized a grand Iftar and a
fundraiser this Saturday aimed at fuelling their push for promotion to the
Kenyan Premier League.
Club president Abilrahman Hussein (Anza Fresh)
emphasized the importance of community backing, pointing to successful
fan-driven models such as Shabana FC, Gor Mahia, and AFC Leopards.
“The contribution from the Harambee will 100% go to
the team. We have invited leaders but the community is the big stakeholders
because the team is theirs. We have seen teams like Shabana, Gor Mahia and AFC
Leopards which are owned by the community and this is the path we want to take
as a team.”
The event will also feature the launch of a new
playing and fans’ kit — a symbolic step toward strengthening that community
bond.
“We will be launching our new jersey and we want to
make it affordable to our fans — a jersey you can wear anywhere, in the office
— with the writings ‘Tembea Mombasa’, not with any writings like Anza Fresh but
a unique writing and a symbol to our people.”
