Kenya Morans displayed their dominant run at the 2025 Rugby Africa Men’s Sevens tournament in Mauritius, finishing top of Pool A with a perfect record after edging out Uganda 12-5 in a tense East African derby.

Morans opened their campaign with commanding victories over Côte d'Ivoire (38-0) and Ghana (33-0), showcasing their attacking flair and defensive discipline. Their final pool match, however, proved to be a much sterner test against defending champions Uganda.

Morans Coach Louis Kisia speaking post-match was glad with the team’s performances urging them to take one game at a time.

“Morans are a young team for sure but with a blend of experience they will continue to better their performances focusing on the next game.”

Uganda brought physicality and grit, forcing Kenya into a tactical battle in the first half. It was until the ninth minute that Dennis Abukuse broke the deadlock with a powerful run and finish to give Kenya the lead.

Minutes later, Captain George Ooro doubled the advantage after a brilliant intercept and flowing forward play, with the try converted for a 12-0 lead.

Uganda pulled one back in the 13th minute following a loose pass, but missed the conversion, keeping Kenya ahead.

The final stages were nervy as Uganda applied pressure, but a crucial interception by Brian Mutua in the dying moment’s ensured Kenya’s narrow victory and unbeaten finish in the group stage.

With three wins from three matches, the Morans now advance to the Cup quarterfinals where they will face Nigeria, a side they blanked 25-0 in the group stages last year. The quarterfinal clash is set for tomorrow at 9:06am (EAT).

Kenya’s impressive start reaffirms their credentials as strong contenders for the Africa Sevens title and a spot at the 2026 Rugby Sevens World Cup and climb up the division.
