The national men’s basketball team is in training camp
at the Nyayo Gymnasium ahead of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 African
Qualifiers scheduled for February 25-27 in Dakar, Senegal.
The Morans assistant head coach Sadat Gaya says one of
the key challenge is the fact that some players remain unavailable to train as
they are engaged with their clubs in the ongoing KBF Premier League playoffs.
Some of the players that are currently playing in the
semi-final playoffs include Ulinzi’s Victor Bosire, Joseph Khaemba, Valentine
Nyakinda and captain Eric Mutoro. Others are Kenya Ports Authority’s Job Byron
and Victor Ochieng from Equity Bank
However, the team has been boosted by the arrival of USA-based
Orion Onyango while head coach Cliff Owuor who was appointed early last month is
expected to join the team in camp.
“Onyango came last week but joined us on Monday this
week for training. He is an amazing player who will boost the morale of the
team. We are also expecting our head coach Cliff who was to join us last week,
he will be joining us anytime,” Gaya said.
Morans are expected to meet Democratic Republic of
Congo on 25th of February, Egypt on 26th February and Senegal on 27th February
in their Group D matches of the first round of the 2023 World Cup qualifiers in
Dakar, Senegal.
Return matches are scheduled for July this year at a
venue yet to be announced. The best three teams from all the four groups will
advance to the second round of qualifiers.
