More misery on Mathare as Posta win second in a row

Posta Rangers overcame relegation-threatened Mathare United 2-0 to pile more pressure on the 2008 Kenyan Premier League champions, in the only topflight match on Friday at the Sports Centre Kasarani Annex.

After a series of uninspiring results, Posta’s rejuvenation under new coach Stanley Okumbi who took over from now Gor Mahia assistant coach Sammy ‘Pamzo’ Omolo over a month ago, continued with Alex Lungaji and Amos Kigadi netting one each to seal the victory.

Luganji opened the scores just six minutes into the game, but the mailmen had to wait until the 80th to grab the second goal which also sealed Okumbi’s second successive win in the league after beating champions Gor Mahia in the previous outing.

The win, according the former Harambee Stars coach, is an indication of growing confidence in his team.

“It shows that the job we have been doing is bearing fruits. We are keen to avoid conceding goals and importantly to convert the chances we create. Scoring has been a problem but we are getting somewhere, and the confidence is now increasing,” the Rising Stars tactician added.

For Salim Ali, Mathare’s coach, who has not won since January, lamented his charges are not getting it right in front of opponents’ goals despite belabouring to fix the problem since the onset of the season.

“Our main problem is that we are not scoring, but it is good now we are playing as a team. The second goal we have conceded was however not a clean one, the ball didn’t cross the line,” offered Ali.

Mathare have lost nine matches and won only two, while registering four draws hence their nine points from 14 rounds.

Rangers have 17 points after 16 matches at 14th on the log, while Mathare are 17th just above struggling Zoo Kericho whose season’s total tally is seven points.

Meanwhile, seven more fixtures are lined up in round 16 of the FKF-PL, with leaders Tusker taking on fast rising Nairobi City Stars as Vihiga United host AFC leopards in Mumias on Saturday.

Francis Kimanzi led Wazito will host Bandari in the last Saturday fixture. On Sunday, second placed KCB will host Zoo, Kakamega Homeboyz lock horns with Sofapaka in Kakamega while Nzoia Sugar will be up against Ulinzi Stars.

Round 16 concludes on Monday when newbies Bidco will clash with champions with jaded Gor Mahia.
