Ulinzi Warriors head coach Bernard Mufutu has welcomed the
postponement of the 2026 Kenya National Basketball League season, saying the
delay gives teams additional time to sharpen their preparations before tip-off.
The Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF) confirmed on Friday
last week that the league, initially scheduled to tip off on Saturday, January
24, will now start on February 6, 2026.
The federation stated that the move was purely administrative and reflects
its commitment to a professionally run and sustainable league.
While postponements often spark anxiety among players and
coaches, Mufutu maintains the extra window could prove valuable for technical
preparation.
“It’s beneficial for the teams because it allows them to prepare
better. These activities and friendly games give us time to polish up a few
areas in readiness for the start of the season,” said Mufutu.
Ulinzi Warriors, who are looking to re-establish themselves
among title contenders, have spent the off-season rebuilding their roster after
last year’s mixed results.
The club is determined to integrate several young prospects
while retaining a core of experienced players.
According to Mufutu, the additional training period will help
bridge tactical gaps, improve player conditioning, and enhance chemistry within
the squad ahead of competitive play.
The postponement also gives rival clubs, including champions
Kenya Ports Authority (KPA), Equity Dumas, and Nairobi City Thunder, more time to
finalize transfers, complete player registrations, and organize warm-up
fixtures.
The 2026 season is expected to be one of the most competitive in
recent years, driven by growing interest in the league from youth players
emerging from schools and the foreigners showing interest in joining
Kenyan clubs.
Despite the slight disruption to the calendar, league
stakeholders remain optimistic that the delayed kickoff will translate into a
smoother campaign, improved game-day organization, and a better on-court product
for fans once action resumes in February.
