His appointment was announced via a Gazette Notice No. 8501 by Chief Justice Martha Koome, who also chairs the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).
Murunga is not a newcomer to the SDT. He previously served under Senior Counsel John Ohaga, whose 10-year tenure as SDT chair ended in November 2024.
After Ohaga's departure, Hon. Jane Njeri Onyango briefly held the reins in an acting capacity until a substantive appointment could be made.
Murunga was instrumental in key decisions during his previous term and brings extensive experience in legal and dispute resolution matters.
A seasoned Advocate of the High Court of Kenya, Murunga was admitted to the bar in 2000 and boasts 25 years of post-admission experience.
He is also a registered arbitrator with the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb), underlining his preference for resolving disputes outside traditional courtrooms.
Currently a partner at Simba & Simba Advocates, Murunga leads the Commercial and Corporate Law Department.
His leadership portfolio also includes chairing the Centum Investments Staff Pension Scheme and serving on the Council of the Association of Retirement Benefit Schemes.
Murunga will initially serve alongside Allan Mola as the JSC finalizes recruitment for the remaining tribunal members, whose terms expired in May.
With a strong background in law, arbitration and governance, Murunga is expected to build upon Ohaga’s legacy and steer the SDT into an outstanding avenue for resolving sports-related disputes across Kenya.
