The closure forms part of a broader strategy to ensure the country is fully ready for the continental showpiece.
According to Local Organising Committee (LOC) chairman Nicholas Musonye, the Ministry of Sports and Sports Kenya have prioritised upgrading key facilities to meet international standards following the conclusion of the 2024 CHAN tournament.
However, the move is expected to disrupt the top-tier football league, with clubs likely to seek alternative venues for their matches.
“We are ready for AFCON, and when we close some of these venues, it is not intentional. We want to host the best AFCON for the legacy of this country,” Musonye said. “We ask for patience, especially from football and rugby stakeholders, as some league matches may have to be played away from Nairobi.”
Musonye also issued a stern warning to individuals known for hooliganism, saying they risk being barred from accessing both Kasarani and Nyayo National Stadium if destructive behavior continues.
“This time, hooligans will not be allowed to destroy facilities and walk away. We know them, and they have been getting away with it. That will not happen as we prepare for AFCON,” he stated, adding that he would seek authority to restrict access if necessary.
The former CECAFA Secretary General urged Kenyans to take responsibility for protecting public facilities instead of blaming the government for vandalized infrastructure.
“You have talked about vandalism at Kasarani. Who is to blame? Blame our people. When these facilities are put in place, you don’t break them and blame the government. It is our responsibility to safeguard our facilities. It is very strange that in this country, you cause damage and get away with it.” Musonye lamented.
Kasarani will undergo a major turf overhaul, including installation of a hybrid playing surface, while the 18,000-seater Nyayo Stadium will be fitted with a canopy as both venues are upgraded to world-class standards.
