Muteti, Chepkirui reign supreme at Vienna City Marathon
Kenyans
reigned supreme in this year’s Vienna City Marathon after claiming the top
honours in the 38th edition held on Sunday in Austria.
Cosmas Muteti,
who finished fifth in last year’s Berlin Marathon, clocked 2: 06.53 to win the
men’s title leading his compatriot Leonard Langat, who came second in 2:06.59,
in a one-two finish.
The
30-year-old Muteti was one of the pre-race favourites and prevailed against his
compatriot Langat and Oqbe Kibrom (2:07:25) from Eritrea.
Muteti, who
improved his previous best time by almost two minutes, secured prize money of
15,000 euros.
In the women’s
race, defending champion Vibian Chepkirui won with a course record clocking
2:20.59 ahead of fellow Kenyans Ruth Chebitok and Sheila Jerotich to a podium
sweep.
Chepkirui surprised
last year in the Austrian capital when she won her debut at the classic
distance.
The Vienna
City Marathon is among the major spring road races coming back to their
original event date.
