Mwenda bullish as Kangaru High launch rugby 7s county title

Kangaru High School rugby sevens team targets the East Africa Secondary School Games in Rwanda, but are keen to clear ‘easy hurdles’ before the international fiesta starting with the Embu County games set to kick off on Thursday at Nyangwa Boys High school.

Kangaru were East African finalists three years ago in Rwanda, where they lost 14-21 to Uganda’s St Familie in the TCC grounds in Huye.

Thus, head coach Benson Mwenda says his charges will be using the County fiesta as a warm up to the regional’s and eventually nationals, underscoring opposition at this level is weak for his side.

“We are taking every level at a time, so for us is to win the County Games in Nyangwa followed by the regional’s in Kitui. We are confident about flying Kenya’s flag in the East African Games, so we can’t afford to slip anywhere on the way.

“We respect our competitors at this level but being honest, we want to fix it in our mind we are settling for nothing less than the top spot,” charged Mwenda.

In the sub county games Kangaru played to their last sweat to qualify for the county level where their close rivals St. Pauls Kevote pulled a brilliant performance in the 14-7 final.

“We credit Kevote, they were worthy competitors in our previous hurdle but we are did’nt just rest after that gruelling final. We come for the County Games more focused and polished,” the bullish coach stated.

Mwenda who is also a Kangaru alumnus has no injury worries, his only concern being poor officiating as witnessed in the sub county level.

“I’m pleading with the organisers to ensure the games are free and fair to prevent lame excuses when mistakes occur. They should also be in the front line to fight age cheating fiasco experienced in the last edition,” concluded Mwenda.

Other games to be played include football for the Under-19 and Under-16 both boys and girls, volleyball, netball and racket games.
