The second
edition of the Nairobi City Marathon that was slated to be held on May 21 has
been postponed to July 2.
Race
director Ibrahim Hussein told a press briefing on Thursday that the event has
been moved due to a congestion of races happening elsewhere during the period.
Organisers
are targeting to attract top athletes and as such must find a date that
accommodates their schedules.
"The
reason we are moving this event is because when we analysed the races that are
taking place all over the globe, we found out that many of our athletes ran in
April while others are competing in May. We have therefore agreed to move the
event to July to accommodate top athletes," said Hussein.
Last year’s
inaugural race presented logistical nightmares for technical officials as the
event was held just the day after the 2022 Kip Keino Classic.
At the same
time, Hussein said they are targeting over 15,000 participants in this year’s
race.
"We will
be having full marathon, half marathon, 10km and 5km races. So far we have
registered some 2,500 athletes and our target is to have 15,000- 20,000 runners
on that day, " he said.
Hussein, who
is also a World Athletics certified measurer explained that a few tweaks will
be made on the course of the race
"The
course remains the same apart from the start and the finishing points to avoid
lapses witnessed in last year's race."
Local athletes
will register with Ksh1,500 for 42km race, Ksh1,200 for half marathon, Ksh1,000
for 10km and Ksh500 for 5km.
Their international
counterparts will pay $90 for 42km race, $60 for 21km race, $40 for 10km and
$20 for 5km race.
