Tennis Kenya has secured the rights to host the Davis Cup Africa Group IV tournament this June, marking a major return of continental tennis to Nairobi.
The four-day event will feature eight nations—Algeria,
Angola, Botswana, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ghana, Mozambique,
Zimbabwe, and Kenya—competing in a round-robin and playoff format, with
promotion to Africa Group III in 2027 at stake.
In a statement released Tuesday, Tennis Kenya described the
successful bid as a milestone that reinforces Kenya’s growing status as a hub
for international sporting events.
Tennis Kenya President Wanjiru Karani expressed confidence
in both the country’s hosting capabilities and the national team’s prospects.
“This is a proud moment for Tennis Kenya and for Kenya. We are ready to host
the Davis Cup—the World Cup of Tennis. We are ready to compete, cheer, and show
the world what Kenyan tennis is all about,” she said.
Kenya has a strong history with the tournament, having
previously hosted editions in 2018 and 2019. On both occasions, the national
team delivered impressive performances that led to promotion, underscoring the
advantage of competing on home turf.
Honorary Secretary General Nancy Nduku emphasized the
broader benefits for tennis development. “We are delighted to welcome Africa
back to Nairobi. Hosting this tournament not only advances local tennis but
also gives our players a valuable home advantage as they compete for
promotion,” she noted.
The Davis Cup’s return is expected to energize the local
tennis scene, providing players with exposure to high-level competition and
inspiring emerging talent across the country
Beyond the court, the tournament is projected to boost
economic activity, particularly in hospitality, transport, and tourism, as
teams, officials, and fans converge on the capital
