Nairobi Water defend WASCO Games title

Nairobi Water company football team defended their title in the National Water Sports Companies Organization (WASCO) Games after defeating Kakamega Water Company 4-2 on penalties after the match ended in a barren draw at full time.

Playing in the University of Embu ground Nairobi scored their penalties through Michael Ochieng, Gerald Ndungu, Stephen Omondi and Elijah Isavai while Kakamega scored two penalties through Athemus Masheti and Phillip while Fredrick Serete and Samuel Oruna were denied by Nairobi’s goal keeperPeter Odoyo.

The finals was a repeat of Pool B match where Kakamega whitewashed Nairobi 3-1.

It was their fourth title in a row and they will represent Kenya in East Africa Games in Uganda.

Kakamega entered the match more confident than the defending champions with Kakamega missing an early chance in the first 10 minutes after Eugine Kiverenge shot went wide after receiving a through pass from Phillip Amunga.

In the 24th minutes, Nairobi shot stopper Peter Odonyo saved his team punching out John Ogoti’s shot after he had side stepped Nairobi’s defense.

The pacey Nairobi striker Elijah Isavai run to the flanks where he had a chance to score but his shot went wide.

Nairobi head coach Dennis Mambo made three changes to his side Kelvin Were coming in for Moses Shisia, Humprey Toboso coming in for Polycap Ochieng while Daniel Waweru came in for Michael Ongeny.

On his part, Kakamega’s Chitech Charles made one substituition bringing in keeper Shitambasi Jaffery for Oscar Lihanda during penalties.

Nairobi head coach Dennis Mambo was happy with his charges congratulating both teams.

“We’re happy with the boys having played according to our game plan and I also congratulate our opponents for playing a good game,” he added.

According to Kakamega’s head coach Chitech Charles the game as fair and the better team won.

“We played our best but luck wasn’t on our side so we’ll go back to the drawing board and come back stronger next year,” said Chitech.

Nakuru Water Company finished third after they narrowly won 1-0 against the host Embu Water Company 1-0 in the third place play off.
