National KSSSA Games: Juma stars as Western Region reigns supreme in short races

Rabecca Juma was the star of the
moment as she swept clean 100m, 100m hurdles and 200m races in the
climactic finale of national secondary school athletics competitions on Friday, held
at Moi Girls High School - Eldoret.
Rabecca, a student at Misimu Secondary
School in Bungoma recorded a speed of 17:02 seconds in 100m girl's category
before clocking 17:04 in 100m hurdles and rounded off her emphatic victory in 200m
race where she clocked a speed of 24:08.
The 18- year old form three student
who finished second in last year's 100 m hurdles race was overjoyed to win the
race after her second attempt.
"I knew I was going to win, I
trained hard for it and I want to make sure I keep the momentum in the East
African school games," noted Rabecca.
His counterpart Alvin Inyangu of Nyang'ori Boys from Vihiga won the 200m race after coming second in 100m, clocking 21:05 seconds. Brian Okoth from Sipala Secondary School in Bungoma finished first in 100m clocking 10:08 seconds.
Inyangu was elated after the win after
his disappointment in the 100m race.
"I trained hard to win the race.
I want to thank my trainer and coaches Mr. Mwema and Mrs. Chebii for helping me
rise to stardom, noted Inyangu.”
In 400 m boy's category Emmanuel
Soita from Chelebei Secondary School in Bungoma emerged first clocking 51:03
while 400m hurdles boy's category saw Laban Kipchirchir from Sangalo Secondary
in Nandi record a speed of 57:2 seconds.
In 3000 m women Mercy Chepkemoi of
Tiloa secondary school in Nakuru crossed the finishing line first clocking
9:31:02 as Isca Chelang'at from Kalyet clocked 9:38:04 to finish second.
3000 m Steeplechase champion Matthew
Kipkogei yet again stole the 5000 m race boy's catagory, winning the race with
ease.
The son of the former 1998 world
junior steeplechase champion William Koskei recorded a speed of 14:29:02
minutes to storm to victories in two races.
10,000 m race girl's catagory will be
represented by two girls from Kalyet secondary school in Kericho, Maureen
Cherotich leading her counterpart Faith Cherotich after clocking 36:15:01
against Faith's 36:55:01.
Cherotich who aims to follow Faith
Kipyegon's footsteps was confident of bringing the 10,000 m gold medal home.
"I was happy to win the race. I
was racing against time because I want to set records. I am out to do even better
in the future races," noted an zealous Cherotich.
In 10,000 m walking race boy's category,
Samuel Nyanchoga who schools at Itibo boys in Kisii finished ahead of Vincent
Langat from Korosyot Secondary School after recording a speed of 48:55:02.
