National pool challenge enters home stretch in Meru

The first round of the biggest national pool challenge in recent years ‘Sasa Mchipuko’ organised by a local youth empowerment outfit Base Yetu, enters the home stretch this weekend at the Meru national showground.

The four-day event had initially attracted 258 amateur pool players.

The regional coordinator of Base Yetu, Naftari Onywera, said their aim is to nature talent from different parts of the country where the best players will meet in Nairobi to select a national champion.

“From what we have seen in the inter units challenge the best pool players are out here and we will make sure their talents are brought out,” Onywera said.

Despite the common belief that pool tables are found in clubs and bars the organisation is working hard to change the perception.

“Our aim is to make sure people play pool in a drug-free zone, the perception that you can only play pool in a bar has no place in our organisation.

“We’ve gone around and realized a lot of talent nationally and the best in Kenya will play the best in East Africa and then meet the best in the world,” he added.

The regional winner will bag Sh50,000 with the national champion taking home Sh500,000.

The knockout face will be graced by a host of leaders including Base Yetu CEO Nick Mararo.
