Njiru, Jepkosgei win Army Cross Country titles

Kennedy Njiru and Joyceline Jepkosegei will lead the Kenya Army team during the upcoming Kenya Defence Forces Cross Country, where a team will be selected to represent the country in the East African championship.

Kennedy Njiru won the men’s 10KM race in 27.37.01 while Jepkosgei retained the women’s title after clocking 31.36.04 for her victory.

Corporal Njiru from Lanet told Citizen Digital that the win was a morale booster and set his eyes on participating at the 2019 World Cross Country Championship.

“I’m delighted to emerge victorious and I’m now looking forward to represent my team in the regional competition. I’m determined to participate in the World Cross next year,” Njiru said.

Fredrick Morang’a came second with 27.41.07 as Erick Tirop from Thika settled for third place in 27.52.00.

In the women’s race, Irine Kimai needed 31.53.00 to finish behind Jepkosgei and Mercy Wanjiru came third at 32.33.05.

World Half Marathon record holder Jepkosgei who turns 25 on December 8, said weather conditions had not been favorable but was to retain her title.

“Its too hot in Nairobi and that was my biggest challenge. My secret in every race is to prepare thoroughly so I don’t have to be worried by who my opponents is,” Jepkosgei said.
