The 2023 Floodlit tournament has served some exciting and
exhilarating encounters so far with the battle lines already drawn for the
final, as Nondescripts RFC face nine-time Floodies winners KCB at the Impala
grounds here in Nairobi.
Nondies who were the inaugural winners of the Floodies
tournament back in 1983 put up a spirited performance in the Semi-final last
weekend to see off Blak Blad and punch their ticket to the final.
Captain Ian Mabwa says they will attack KCB with everything
they’ve got in their arsenal to try clinch the title.
“What we are doing this week is we are trying to sharpen
our “Arsenal” if I may put it like that because we realized that against Blak
Blad we were not too clinical; we were not too efficient as far as our set
pieces are concerned so this week its just about sharpening and just making
sure we take our chances when opportunities present against KCB.”
Nondies who got relegated at the end of the 2021/2022
season have bounced back in style winning instant promotion back to the top
tier and going on to win a leg (Tisap) in the National sevens circuit.
Mabwa, the former Impala Saracens Academy graduate has
credited their unity as a team and good support from management as the
motivating factor behind this recent resurgence.
“We have such a supportive coaching staff and the larger
Nondies family in terms of management; so they are doing their utmost best to
make sure we are as comfortable as possible and that’s why you’re able to see
the results. The coaching has really improved in that one year; we’ve done our
best to stick together as a unit and that’s why it’s culminating into all these
positive results on the pitch.”
KCB will be looking to become the most successful team in
the Floodlit tournament’s history as they chase their tenth title but Mabwa has
warned that they are not in the final as spectators
“Last year, having reviewed what went wrong and what we
could’ve done better, I feel like this year there is something different. We’ve
gone through some form of metamorphosis if I may put it that way because since
then we’ve really done our best to improve; a lot of big players coming in and
so we feel this year we are really eyeing that title; so expect a very
explosive game, very intense and hopefully we go away with our fourth title.”
The final will be preceded by the third place play off as
Menengai Oilers take on Blak Blad.
