NSL: Bomet, Sacco win as title hunt gains momentum
National Super League side APS Bomet enhanced their
stranglehold on the league leadership thanks to a narrow 1-0 victory over
Naivas FC to open a six-point gap between them and second-placed Fortune Sacco.
Lawrence Kibet’s well-taken penalty in the first
half was enough to secure all points on offer for Bomet as they held off a
second-half barrage of attacks from Naivas to prevail at the final whistle.
Elsewhere, Fortune Sacco made the most out of
Muhoroni Youth’s 1-0 loss to SS Assad to reclaim second spot thanks to a 2-0
success over struggling Mombasa Elite at Kianyaga stadium.
At the same time, struggling Silibwet Leons
tactician Joseph Ongoro is confident his side will not be drawn into this
season’s relegation dogfight at the end of the season.
Leons trounced struggling Kisumu All-Stars 4-2 on
Wednesday at the IAAF Bomet stadium to rise to 13th on the log and will go all
out for a similar outcome in their next assignment away to high-flying Muhoroni
Youth.
Ongoro was particularly impressed by his side’s
resilience against his former side, terming their latest conquest as a welcome
spark that will launch their quest to stay afloat at the end of the season.
“We have struggled recently and we welcome today’s
win because it moves us higher on the log as we chat our way to safety,” he
said. “I am confident about our chances
of having fate in our as we approach the closing stages of the season.”
Kisumu All-Stars head coach Evans Oketch rued their
slump against Silibwet to’ avoidable mistakes’ that they will have to arrest to
rekindle their fight for safety.
“My biggest take away from the game was our ability
to implement our game plan but costly mistakes robbed us of the win. We will
address all the mistakes in our subsequent training sessions and I expect a
response in our next assignment against Coastal Heroes,” he said.
