NSL: Mara maintain fine run, Seal go third
Mara Sugar maintained their fine run in the National Super
League as their 1-0 scalp over struggling Mully Children’s Family (MCF) at
Awendo Green Stadium on Sunday elevated them to fourth place on the log.
Joseph Okwenda’s solitary strike in the 77th minute was the
difference between the two sides as the hosts, Mara, held out for their first
home win of the season despite a late barrage of attacks from MCF.
In his assessment of their display, Mara Sugar tactician
Francis Xavier saw their recent success as an indication of their continued
growth, despite their indifferent start to this season.
“We managed to scrape out a win, which is very important for
any team that wants a successful season."
"We weren't at our best, but I'm glad we overcame the
pressure of getting a home victory, and that will help us since the boys will
be more relaxed," said the coach.
The team’s struggles at home saw them endure a 1-0 defeat
against league leaders Shabana a fortnight ago and a barren stalemate against
Migori Youth, much to the frustration of their faithful.
Xavier’s stable has garnered 14 points from their opening
eight fixtures and will aim to make it three wins on the bounce when they face
third-placed Murang’a Seal at St. Sebastian Park in Murang’a on Friday.
Elsewhere, Murang’a extended their rich vein of form thanks
to their 3-1 dismantling of Vihiga United at Bukhungu stadium in Kakamega on
Sunday, a feat that saw them leapfrog Migori Youth to third place even though
with a game in hand over second-placed Kibera Black Stars and leaders Shabana.
Mombasa Elite settled for a 1-1 draw against Kisumu All
Stars to break away from the drop zone, while sophomores Naivas moved up to
seventh following their 1-0 win over Migori Youth.
Debutants Darajani Gogo shrugged off their 3-1 loss to
Shabana on Wednesday by sharing spoils with struggling Mwatate United thanks to
a 0-0 scoreline at the final whistle.
