NSL review: Black Stars keep pressure on Shabana as Mara Sugar halt slump
National Super
League sophomores Mara Sugar tactician Francis Xavier has termed their 1-0 win
over debutants Darajani Gogo as a “turnaround moment” that will spark their
campaign following a series of disappointing results since the turn of the
year.
Mara’s last win,
a 2-0 scalp against Coastal Heroes came on December 9 before the Christmas
break, and the Awendo Green Stadium side had lost twice and drawn once in their
opening three fixtures this year.
Xavier, who
previously led Division One side Soy United and turned out for Shabana in his
playing days, is adamant his players will build on their latest conquest to
have a successful campaign in their second year in the second-tier league.
“I am proud of
our progress this far since our promotion and I’m confident we will build on
our weekend victory to win our next match against MCF.
“Our struggles
more so at home are visible to everyone but I am positive the boys will be more
confident to floor MCF who are equally a good side.”
While outlining
their ambitions for the season, Xavier said their resolve is to finish among
the five best sides in the division, a feat that will indicate their growth
since they were promoted.
“We have grown
tremendously in stature and profile since our promotion, and a top-five finish
will significantly enhance our profile.
“The fan base
has been our strength, and we want to show them that we are moving in the right
direction.
