Nzoia hand Wazito heavy defeat to race clear in NSL

Unbeaten front runners, Nzoia United left it late to hand Wazito FC a 3-0 hiding at Camp Toyoyo Grounds in Nairobi on Saturday to pull 12 points clear of the chasing pack in the National Super League (NSL).

Third-placed Vihiga United were frustrated in a 0-0 stalemate by visiting strugglers FC Talanta at the Mumias Sports Complex to miss the chance to leap above Nakumatt FC into second as Moyas FC thumped Oserian 2-0 in other Saturday games.

However, it is a matter of when, not if Nzoia earn promotion to the Kenyan Premier League next season after a three-minute goal rush in the closing stages of the second stanza ensured they remain on track with 14 games left.

The visitors dominated proceedings straight from the first whistle and looked the better side all afternoon and had a goal to show for their efforts when top scorer and coveted striker, Masita Masuta made it 1-0 as the first half hour closed in to give them the advantage at the break.

Coming from a loss against Nairobi Stima, Wazito’s coach, Frank Ouna, was forced to field a makeshift starting line-up after missing 15 players who were out due to work commitments and injuries but enjoyed a good opening spell to the game before Bernard Mwalala’s men took charge.

Substitute Patrick Kwitonda got his name on the score sheet when he tucked the second 10 minutes before time before Luke Namanda put the icing on the cake soon after.

“We pressed them in the first half and they finally cracked open in the second. We had a good game and took three important points from the match.

“Our opponents would love to be in our position and although we cannot say we are going to win the league at the end of the season, we are in a comfortable place,” Nzoia Team Manager, Yaptes Mokua told Citizen Digital after the match.
