Nzoia intensify preps for new season despite kickoff uncertainty
Nzoia Sugar FC tactician Salim Babu says his team is ready for
the new season, although the kick-off date is still unknown.
The FKF Transition Committee had
announced that the new campaign will start on September 24 before pushing it to
October 1, in an announcement by Head of Secretariat Linda Oguto on Monday.
Returning FKF president Nick
Mwendwa on the other hand says the league will start late next month, as his
team needs time to settle in office after being in the cold since November
2021.
This has left
teams without a clear path to follow, and Babu is itching to get started.
“We are in good shape, we are ready to play.
But the challenge now is that we do not know when the league will start and
that will definitely affect the team at some point because during pre-season we
work with a schedule with the date of kickoff in mind.
“We worked with the
Transition Committee’s dates but we are not sure whether the league will kick
off on the 24th because we are getting conflicting information, no one is
setting things straight” Babu said.
Gor Mahia, Kariobangi Sharks, Kenya Police, Sofapaka, Nairobi City Stars, and Ulinzi Stars commence a week-long pre-season cup on Tuesday (today) and Babu wishes teams from the Western region could have the same to help them keep fit.
“I see teams based in Nairobi have a week-long tournament and I think that is a very good thing for them because it will help them prepare well, it is a competitive cup and I wish we had the same in this Western region,” he added.
As per the Transition
Committee’s fixtures, Nzoia were set to start the season with a match against
Bidco United in Thika.
