Okombe murder suspects revealed
Four suspects held over the death of rugby star Mike Okombe were on Tuesday arraigned in court but will remain in custody until Monday, as police continue to investigate their alleged role in the murder.
Nakuru Chief Magistrate Josephat Kalo allowed the continued detainment of the four on the strength of a sworn affidavit by the investigating officer corporal Jacob Gathuima.
“The four shall remain in custody as the police continue with their investigations for a period of seven days the respondents may apply for bond once they are formally charged before the High Court,” the magistrate ordered.
State counsel Bidan Kihara told the court that the police are yet to complete investigations , adding that they made the arrest on Monday, saying they need more time to finalize the investigations.
According to Kihara, police are anticipating to make more recoveries at the scene of the crime that would lead to the apprehension of more suspects in the case.
“We are anticipating making some recoveries at the scene which will lead to more arrest of suspects at the scene, the police are yet to conclude investigations,” he said.
The four Maryanne Mumbi Wachira, Calvin Okoth, Eric Mochache and Vincent Omondi who appeared in court alongside their lawyer Kamau Chomba, opposed the application.
Chomba argued that the state was treating his clients as accused persons yet they are suspects, adding that the detention of his clients would lead to an infringement of their rights.
“I strongly oppose the application by the prosecution in detaining my clients for more days as it is unconstitutional,” heprotested.
According to the accused, police are trying to frustrate them in the case by applying for more time to have them detained.
According to the prosecution, the suspects linked to the murder were six, but two have since been released after interrogation by the homicide sleuths at different stations within the county.
The four were at the party where the rugby star was allegedly stabbed to death by his lover Mumbi. It is alleged that the suspect stabbed the player with a kitchen knife after a scuffle with Okombe.
At their Olive In residence in Kiamunyi estate, detectives had a hard time inn gathering evidence after it emerged the blood stains of Okombe were cleaned before the scene was cordoned off.
The death of Okombe has sparked outrage from rugby enthusiasts and Kenyans at large. The last love murder in Nakuru was witnessed less than two months ago where a regular police shot and killed his wife before turning the gun on himself.
