Okoth tells Vihiga to pull together after KPL axe

Vihiga United’s interim coach Sammy Okoth has told his players to take relegation on the chin and regroup for a quick return to the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) next season.

Vihiga’s two-year stay in the top flight was brought to an end last weekend when they lost 2-1 to Western Stima in the penultimate round of the KPL season.

Okoth himself faces a bleak future at the club after failing to achieve the task at which he was brought to accomplish; keep the team up.

Okoth was hired on a contract of three month following sacking of the then head coach Mike Mururi and his assistants Francis Xavier as well as Tom Tera due to poor performances.

The former Zoo FC head coach however failed to meet the target of his employer which was to lead the team to avoid relegation.

“The team need to go back to drawing board, re-organise to look ways on how to return back to the league, Players should not panic since its part of football,” Okoth said.

However the tactician did not say much about his future with the County sponsored club, saying his future will be negotiated after his three months contract are over and that it is the work of leadership of the team to handle that.

“If they will need my services after the three months are over then we shall negotiate from there for now it’s to wait and see,” he said.

Okoth’s sentiments were supported by interim assistant head coach Alex Alumira who said there are issues that need resolving in the team.

“We should first accept there were problems, therefore we should first find out where they were coming from and see how we can solve them before we think of starting a new season campaign,” Alumira said.

Meanwhile Vihiga County FKF chairman Anamange Savulani has urged the team to remain united despite being relegated.

“I am not happy with Vihiga United relegation, but I would like to urge them not to disintegrate but rather remain united so that we can fight back for a space in the KPL in 2020-2021 calendar year. We came from far but lack eluded us,” Anamange said.

Vihiga whose hopes of remaining in the league came to an end over the weekend when Western Stima came from behind to hammer them 2-1 in a match played that was played at Mumias Sports Complex will be going back to National Super League, after staying in the top tier for two seasons.

The Vihiga County based team was formed in 2014 and they are going back where they started.
