Okudo replaces Kaberia as Sports PS

Joe Okudo has been named as new Sports Principal Secretary replacing Ambassador Kirimi Kaberia who has been moved to the Ministry of Mining in a similar capacity.

The changes were made by President Uhuru Kenyatta in a mini- cabinet reshuffle Tuesday.

However Ambassador Amina Mohamed has been retained as the Cabinet Secretary for Sports.

Kaberia, in his stint at Kencom House has had a frosty relationship with federations, particularly Football Kenya Federation chief Nick Mwendwa who accused him of being a stumbling block, but Kaberia maintained that he was merely playing his role as a custodian of the funds allocated to the ministry by ensuring accountability.

It remains to be seen how the sports federations will work with the man in charge Okudo and the policy changes he may bring to a sector that has been dogged by financial crises.

Okudo, who held a similar position  in the Tourism ministry has his in-tray full. He will first have to confront the financial scourge that is rampaging through Kenyan top flight league KPL, train his eyes on ensuring that Kenya hosts an impeccable World Athletics U-20 Championship set for July in Nairobi.

Also, being an Olympics year, Okudo  has to ensure that Kenya’s team to the Games does not run into headwinds as far as facilitation and payment of allowances is delayed.

This has been an Achilles heel every time Kenya heads into major competitions.
