Okwemba aims to recreate Koyonzo rugby magic at Bokoli

A two-time national and East African champion with Koyonzo’s rugby 7s team, Okwemba is already laying down the marker to help Bokoli dominate the rugby scene in Secondary School games.

“Bokoli has not been playing competitive rugby and that is what we want to do here. We have prepared the team well and we are doing fairly despite the short period of preparations. We have played friendlies and the results have been positive,” Okwemba told Citizen Digital.

Okwemba was handed a transfer letter by the Teachers Service Commission in August 2025, to teach Kiswahili and Religion at Bokoli. School games fanatics are eagerly waiting for him to invoke the spirit of the school little known in rugby as he did at Koyonzo.

The 2023 SOYA award winner is confident of beating local giants Bungoma high school and Kibabii Boys to the County crown as his first assignment.

“I’m in a new school though in a familiar territory, I’m confident we will reign supreme soon. We want to start by fighting for the county title.”

Okwemba says it is possible to do the impossible at Bokoli at the expense of the local giants, as he managed the litmus paper tests in Kakamega during his tenure at Koyonzo.

“The competition in Kakamega is stiff compared to Bungoma. If we were able to dominate giants like Kakamega School, St. Peters Mumias, Mukumu and Musingu then I believe we can also do the same against Bungoma and Kibabii,” added Okwemba.

Okwemba is not a new face in Bungoma as he helped Bungoma high school clinch the 2016 national 15s title before going to Koyonzo.

At Koyonzo, Okwemba helped the Kakamega-based school ascend to their first national title in 2022 before helping them defend their crown in 2023 while winning their maiden East African title.
