The crucial Group F football fixtures against Burundi and reigning African champions Ivory Coast will now take place at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe on June 8 and 11.
The all-time national men’s top scorer is warning the move will have adverse effects.
Kenya currently lacks a venue due to the closure of Kasarani and Nyayo stadiums, which are currently undergoing upgrades for the CHAN 2024 and 2027 Africa Cup of Nations tournaments.
The former Kenyan international says the team will lack the fan base support that acts as a 12th man in football.
“It is a shame to have the matches played away from home because FIFA always gives them a calendar for up to three years so they had all time to plan for it is very shameful for the federation and not justice to football fans,” said Oliech.
Oliech opined that the federation should have engaged neighbouring countries like Tanzania and Uganda where home supporters can easily access the venues.
“If the two fields are not available why didn’t they take the game to Uganda or Tanzania which are closer home that would at least have allowed a good number of fans to travel and cheer the team.”
The former Gor Mahia striker also urged Kenyan clubs set to represent the country in the CAF competitions to start finding venues for their home matches to avoid inconveniences.
“Gor have for the past years had challenges when it comes to participation in the continental assignments. Issues with air tickets, allowances, and many more should not arise this time round. It is very demoralizing for the players and I hope the club leadership has put their house in order to make sure such things don't happen this time round.”
The move to close the two country’s biggest stadiums is also hitting athletics preparations ahead of the Paris Olympics.
