Omanyala: Why I have not competed in DL races

Commonwealth and Africa 100m champion Ferdinand Omanyala hopes to win the Diamond League trophy next season after outright skipping the elite series this term.

Omanyala who made his Diamond League debut in Brussels last year did not compete in the 2022 series instead opting for the World Athletics Continental Tour events.

The one-day meetings attract top athletes across the globe culminating in a grand finale where winners are rewarded with diamond trophies, prize money and wild cards for the World Championships.

“Well, this season I have not been able to compete in Diamond League races for some reasons. First, some of the organizers have been reluctant to invite me owing to my previous ban. I was also unable to compete in some races since it clashed with major events. For next season I am hoping to compete in many DL races all the way to the final and win the trophy,” Omanyala said.

At the same time, the African record holder has disclosed that he will step up his preparations for next season in Italy where he is set to camp and sharpen his arsenal ahead of the 2023 campaign.

“Yes, the camp will be in Italy. We don’t have specific dates for now since we have to align with the Athletics Kenya calendar. For us we are approaching the coming season afresh, we will be working on everything and thus I can’t single out any specific aspect to focus on training,” he added.
