Onzere pledges to diversify sports development in Vihiga

This file photo shows Vihiga Queens players celebrating a goal in a past match. The KWPL champions, have been the signature sports team funded by the County Government of Vihiga.

Vihiga County Executive Committee Member for Meshack Onzere, has vowed to give sports a more serious attention, a week after being sworn in.

Onzere, who took over the office from Felistas Barasa, has promised to introduce new programs that will help nature talents in the county.

“I have plans to ensure there are other sporting activities apart from what we have currently. Introducing games like cricket and others will open more opportunities among our youth,” said Onzere.

In 2021, the outgoing office had informed Citizen Digital they had bought land for stadium expansion in Hamisi, but the project never took off due to land ownership disputes.

The residents in the said land demanded for compensation before anything could commence.

“I’m in the process of settling in office. If there is any case over stadium expansion, I will launch an investigation over it very soon. More so, will carry on with the stadium expansion project as planned by the Governor before,” he added.

In 2018, the county boss Dr. Wilber Otichilo had proposed to build an ultra-modern stadium at Kidundu, which about four years down the line, still retains its pathetic state.
