Outgoing KSSSA chair Orero to stay close' to school sports
Newly elected Kibra MP and outgoing Kenya Secondary Schools
Sports Association (KSSSA) Chairman Peter Orero says he is inseparable with school sport,
despite joining politics.
Orero is renowned for nurturing fine talent in Kenya, from
every school he has managed with Dagoretti High School being his last centre as
Principal before venturing into elective politics.
The long-serving sports administrator said he is joined at the
hip with school sports and that he will continue to articulate sports matters
even as a legislator.
“I'll not shy away from talking about school games and even
being involved in it. In parliament, we will always give a hand when required
to ensure the continuity of school games because we know KSSSA is the biggest
platform to churn out talents in the country.
“School games is the backbone of any country as far as sports
growth is concerned and when the sector is not given much attention a country
can collapse its sports systems and hence the need for us to continue
advocating for co-curricular activities,” he told Citizen Digital.
Orero defeated UDA candidate McDonald Mariga and exiting Bernard
Imran Okoth, an independent, in the August 9 polls.
He however said he will continue serving as the Kenya Basketball
Federation (KBF) treasurer because it is an elective position.
Mwalimu Orero, as he is fondly known, joined Dagoretti in 2017
from Upper Hill where he led the Nairobi based school to national accolades
with much ease.
Under his stint, Upper Hill dominated basketball in Nairobi and
were regulars at the national games. At the nationals, they won three titles
and were champions at the 2013 East Africa games held in Lira, Uganda.
Before joining Upper Hill, Orero who is also a football and
basketball coach spent 12 years at Kamukunji where he was a games master with
former Gor Mahia captain Musa Mohammed, Harambee Stars hitman Michael Olunga,
Victor Wanyama, Dennis Oliech, and McDonald Mariga among the long list of
football players scouted by him.
At Lang’ata High School where he had a short stint before
joining Upper Hill, Orero is remembered for nurturing and moulding Victor
Wanyama’s younger sister Mercy Wanyama to basketball star.
Wanyama has since established herself as Kenya’s best power
forward and she is currently turning out for Antuna Adba, a second-tier Spanish
side.
