Over 600 athletes expected at weekend AK meet in Gusii

Over 600 athletes are expected to participate in the Athletics Kenya fifth weekend meeting to be held this Friday and Saturday at Gusii Stadium.

Athletic Kenya South Nyanza chairman, Peter Angwenyi, says over 500 athletes have registered for the event, which is being done online.

Speaking during a tour of the Gusii Stadium today, Angwenyi who was accompanied by other officials said this is the first time Gusii Stadium will host such an event after eight years.

"Gusii Stadium produced the first athletes to represent the country in international competitions and I am happy that after waiting for eight years, this event will be held here," Angwenyi said.

He said for the first time, top athletes in Kenya will be competing in Gusii Stadium under the new synthetic track.

The chairman revealed that top coaches are expected at the stadium as from Tuesday to assess the state of the stadium.

According to Angwenyi, top athletes have confirmed participation among them 800m Commonwealth champion, Mary Moraa.

Athletes from the counties of Kisii, Nyamira, Homabay, Migori, Siaya, Kisumu, Narok, Bomet, Uasin Gishu, Nandi, among others are expected to participate.
