Paul Were returns to Mathare United as Slum Boys add four

Former Harambee Stars winger Paul Were has returned to his boyhood club Mathare United as the Slum Boys announced the signing of another four players on Thursday.

The seasoned player is among the quartet who joined the former FKF-Premier League champions, and who are eyeing an instant return to the topflight league from the National Super League (NSL) following their relegation last year.

Others are Gideon Ogweno, Starlon Odhiambo, and Hilary Kiprotich, with the four becoming the latest acquisitions for the Slum Boys who have also roped in seven new faces during the mid-season window.

“Were is a Kenyan international who has played for Tusker and AFC Leopards locally as well as a host of other teams in Africa and Europe. Part of Kenya’s squad at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, Were’s experience will be key in our bid to return to the Premier League. The speedy winger was last attached to Rayon Sport of Rwanda,” Mathare announced.

Mathare, who are second on the log with 40 points, two adrift of leaders Naivas, said the new signings would be instrumental in their push to return to the top-flight football.

“Ogweno, a goalkeeper, was on the bench in our win over Mombasa Elite last weekend. He joins from Migori Youth and was between the sticks when we faced them on matchday one of this season back in September. He kept a clean sheet in the game as we played out a 0-0 draw.

“Odhiambo also joins from an NSL rival. The left fullback, who is the son of former Mathare United defender Noah Abich, joins from Kibera Black Stars. He also featured for his former team against us earlier in the season as we shared the spoils in a 2-2 draw.

“Hillary Kiprotich is a young midfielder who will first be part of our youth team.”

Meanwhile, FKF-PL side Sofapaka have roped in midfielder Aaron Kitheka who plays as a midfielder with FKF Division Two outfit Itoleka Homeboyz FC.
