Police firm in KPL promotion race, Omondi asserts

National Super League (NSL) side Kenya Police head coach Charles Omondi says his team has achieved the target set in the second leg so far as the duel for promotion to the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) gathers momentum.

His sentiments come after edging dreaded Ushuru FC 2-1 over the weekend at the Karuturi Grounds to increase their chances of making the cut for promotion thanks to Barrack Odhiambo and Brian Musa goals.

“First leg we lost 3-1 to them (Ushuru) and we had to employ a revenge mentality for the match today and we are happy we achieved our objective. I’m not looking at the league leaders Western Stima or Ushuru, but I am focusing on each game and I am urging my strikers to score more goals because this year goals may count in the promotion race,’’ Omondi said.

With just three points adrift of league leaders Western Stima and Ushuru, Omondi observes a KPL place in realistically in their hands but warned against over excitement.

“Football is very interesting; we are playing in a very competitive league because each team wants to the promotion cut. I would like to urge our fans to remain calm as we do our best to catch up with the top two teams,” averred the veteran tactician.

In the last four matches the team has registered mixed results having won three, drawn two and scored 10 goals.

With 25 rounds of matches played, Stima top the log with 52 points while Ushuru are second with 52 but have played a match more. Nairobi Stima are in fourth position with 49 points.
