Mwamba RFC assistant coach Kepher Ndonji says that
top-five finish is the best that the club can now hope for in the Kenya Cup
this season after missing out on the playoff places.
Mwamba, commonly known as Kulubu, have suffered a
lacklustre season and Ndonji says they must fight to finish position five in
the regular league.
Top four finishers automatically secure playoff
slots from where a champion is determined and Ndonji, aware of this, feels a
fifth-place slot will be enough to finish for his charges after a season which
was affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.
“We’re looking for a win in our last two games so
that we can finish the season on a high and try and cement that fifth position,
so we have to change the mentality of the players and make sure they play
according to the planned system,” said Ndonji
After nine rounds of matches, Mwamba lie eighth on
the log with 15 points, 14 adrift of Strathmore Leos who occupy the final
playoff place with two matches to go and Ndonji is confident of bagging maximum
points to boost their chances.
“Before we face MMUST we must make sure we follow
our systems accordingly and play according to our plan from training, so we
must avoid individual play and play as a team,” he added.
He added that players are playing for the club
adding that the only thing that is affecting clubs in Kenya is not being a semiprofessional
club because only clubs like Kabras and KCB that are able to pay players and
give them motivation to play and come for training.
“Some of our clubs lack sponsorship making it
difficult to play against clubs that have got sponsors, so the players only
play for the club because of the love not money,” said Ndonji.
Mwamba face MMUST this weekend at the Masinde
Muliro University Grounds, aiming to seal victory away from home.
