Prisons qualify for African Championship quarters

Five-time champions Kenya Prisons recovered from a 3-1 defeat to El Shams of Egypt to beat Ndella Energie 3-0 (25-15 25-17 25-12) and book a place in the quarter finals of the 26th Women’s African Club Championship in Tunis, Tunisia on Tuesday.

Prisons had won their previous two matches of Pool ‘D’ against Jos of Nigeria and Injis of Cameroun but the slip to meant Prisons had to win against Ndella to qualify.

National team Malkia Strikers veteran; Lydia Maiyo starred for Lung’aho’s side, scoring the highest points in the match as they put up a solid display highlighted by exceptional blocking with Lillian Leilei effective in tactical defense.

“I’m happy that we won today’s match. They were very aggressive on the serve so we had to counter that and I think it worked well. We are yet to know which team we’ll face in the quarters but most likely we might be pooled against Carthage (of Tunisia),” head coach, David Lung’aho said.

Home side Carthage overcame their northern African rivals Mechaal Bejaia of Algeria 3-1 (25-16, 17-25, 25-18, 25-19) on Monday in a ground breaking encounter in Pool A, to top the group with a perfect 3-0 to confirm their last eight ticket ahead of Rwanda’s Revenue Authority and their beaten opponents.

Local champions Kenya Pipeline play FAP of Cameroon in their last group match with the result determining whether they will join Prisons, Carthage, Ahly and Shams in the last eight.
