Purring Telkom confident of title defence

Telkom, the women hockey Premier League defending champions are confident of retaining the title this season, to bag an unprecedented 22nd title.

The champions who defeated Strathmore University 2-0 on Sunday at City Park to go top of the summit with seven points, two above second placed Lakers, dominated the match from the word go and were in front after 15 minutes through a superb goal scored by Elena Chebet from a well worked attack with the result remaining the same to the halftime whistle.

In the second half, Telkom came back more determined and got their second goal in the 37th minute, just seven minutes after the breather through Audrey Omaido who scored from Jackie Mwangi’s pass.

Following the outcome, Telkom coach Josephine Ataro said that despite the tough competition anticipated, they’ll do everything possible to retain the gong praising her improved charges.

“You can see the girls have really played for the results, we have defeated a good side, they are third and we were fourth so we have improved, and yes, our goal is defend our title,” she explained

“Our first game was a draw of 1-1 against Lakers and we really fought to get something from that match. Today was different; we passed the ball with much ease and confidence .We were really good,” said Ataro.

Elsewhere, Butali went third on the log in the men’s league after defeating Kenya Police 2-1 on Saturday while Sailors had mixed results winning y 3-2 on Friday over Strathmore and drawing 2-2 with Sikh Union Nairobi on Sunday.

Wazalendo and Western Jaguars lead the men’s league with nine points having played three matches each .The league continues Monday evening with Strathmore taking on Parkland at the City Park grounds.
