Quins fine form continues as MMUST struggle in Kenya Cup
The seventh round of the national rugby league
Kenya Cup served up lots of entertainment over the weekend with big wins for
defending champions Kabras Sugar and 2022 Kenya cup finalists Menengai Oilers.
League leaders KCB survived a rare scare from
Strathmore Leos with a nervy 33-18 bonus win to stay top of the table with 35
points, five above Menengai Oilers.
Kabras Sugar were a class above Kenyatta
University's Blak Blad as they hammered them 67-3 at the Kakamega showground.
Menengai Oilers whitewashed Mwamba RFC 53-15 at
the Nakuru Showground to keep to pace with KCB.
Catholic Monks recorded a much needed win against
a struggling Masinde Muliro at the CUEA grounds.
Nakuru RFC got their second win of the season in
the bag, humbling University of Nairobi's Mean Machine 37-8 at the University
of Nairobi grounds.
Heavy spenders Kenya Harlequins continued their
fine form in the league as they edged Homeboyz 28-11 at the RFUEA here in
Nairobi.
Quins Assistant coach Simon Odongo says their new
acquisitions have helped the team grow in stature as they gun for the play
offs.
"We noticed our weaknesses at the start and
identified the places we needed to strengthen and now have all our armour and
raring to go. We signed 11 players and they have boosted the team's morale and
also tried to improve the player skill levels and right now are operating well
as a team," said Odongo.
The former Homeboyz tactician opines that good
financial backing is crucial for all teams in the Kenya cup noting only
financial suspectible teams are struggling in the league.
"If you closely monitor how teams have been
performing, it's only teams that have big financial backing that have been
performing well. So you will get the struggling teams are having it hard
ensuring that players are well taken care of and that's the difference between
the top performing teams in the Kenya cup and those that are struggling."
However Odongo says there is much to play for as
major sides haven't yet faced each other adding that the race to the play offs
will be much tougher.
"Competition will be more stiff this year because the top teams haven't played each other yet. KCB haven't played Kabras yet, Oilers are doing well too and they are yet to play KCB and Kabras so it's going to be interesting going into the final fixtures."
Masinde Muliro's form has been spiralling and are rock bottom of the Kenya cup standings with just 3 points from the opening 7 matches The Lurambi boys will need to arrest their situation soon enough if they are to salvage themselves from potential relegation.
There are two rescheduled matches this coming weekend as Kabras take on Homeboyz at the Kakamega Showgrounds with Blak blad battling it out with Strathmore Leos at Kenyatta University.
